It has been two decades since Gothenburg hosted the European Athletics U23 Championships but the biennial event will be returning to Swedish soil one month today (11).

Situated approximately 170 kilometres to the north of Stockholm, Gavle will play host to the biennial championships for the first time from 11-14 July with the European Athletics U20 Championships taking place the following week in Boras.

The event was first held in 1997 - replacing the European U23 Cup in 1992 and 1994 - primarily to facilitate the transition from the U20 to the senior ranks but it is conceivable that some of the medal winners will play a significant role at the IAAF World Championships in Doha later this season.
